A liberal profession covers intellectual activities carried out independently: consulting, training, health, law or creative work. This page mainly serves international students who want to settle in France under that status. Our guides help them build a credible application.
What does a liberal profession involve?
Someone in a liberal profession sells know-how rather than a product. You work on your own account and remain responsible for your services. Two broad families exist.
- Regulated professions, such as lawyer, doctor or architect, overseen by a professional body.
- Non-regulated professions, such as consultant, trainer or translator.
Each family follows its own rules on access, ethics and insurance. For a regulated activity, the required diploma and registration remain preconditions. Check them before any step, since no application makes up for their absence.
Obtaining the “entrepreneur/liberal profession” residence card
This permit targets non-EU students. They can apply for it at the end of their studies. The activity must comply with regulations and prove economically viable. For this type of activity, the applicant must above all show that it generates sufficient income. You prepare the application before your student permit expires, with the prefecture where you live.
Our guide to switching to entrepreneur or liberal profession status details the conditions and timeline. Since 17 May 2026, the request for a viability opinion also relies on a national list of supporting documents.
Proving that a liberal profession can pay
Two variables drive the figures. A consultant's or trainer's income depends on the rate and billable time. The forecast therefore starts from that simple calculation. Take a fictitious example: a consultant bills 400 euros per day. With 80 billed days in the first year, turnover reaches 32,000 euros. Also allow for sickness, holidays and training, since you cannot bill those days.
That figure is not yet income, though. You still need to deduct contributions, tax, professional insurance, software and travel. Only the remaining amount shows whether your means of subsistence suffice. Finally, a cautious scenario with fewer billed days makes the application more credible. A letter of intent or a first quote also makes your prices more convincing.
Mistakes in consulting and services
- Counting a full year of billed days from the very start.
- Forgetting time spent on prospecting and admin.
- Describing a vague offer, such as “doing consulting”.
- Neglecting professional liability insurance, which some trades must hold.
- Ignoring the rules of a professional body.
Our seven mistakes that weaken an application complete this list with practical fixes. Every assumption must also fit your background and diplomas.
Juristelo helps you link rates, billed days, costs and cash flow in consistent tables. Still, the tool replaces neither your prefecture's list nor legal advice. For the official rules, see Service Public and Légifrance.
