A change of status allows an international student to stay in France to work professionally. This page targets non-European graduates who want to start a business or practise a liberal profession. It explains what the authorities expect and how to build a credible application.
What does this change of status involve?
A non-European student lives in France with a student residence permit. To run a self-employed activity as their main occupation, they must switch permits. They then apply for a temporary residence card marked "entrepreneur/liberal profession". Article L. 421-5 of the CESEDA sets the conditions, available on Légifrance.
Three requirements always apply. The activity must comply with regulations. It must also prove economically viable. Finally, it must provide the applicant with sufficient means of support.
Timing and key formalities
Timing matters a great deal. According to Service Public, you file the application in the two months before your student permit expires. However, check the rules of your own prefecture. In addition, since 17 May 2026, the economic viability opinion relies on a national list of supporting documents.
The official Service Public page lists the required documents. To place your project in context, read our article on switching to entrepreneur or liberal profession status.
What the authorities check
The application goes beyond a simple idea. It must make a real project credible. Here are the points under review.
- The reality of the project and its exercise as a main activity.
- The link between your background, your skills and the activity.
- The existence of a market and an identifiable customer base.
- The activity's ability to cover its costs and your income.
- Compliance with the rules for regulated professions.
The business plan ties all these documents together. It presents the offer, customers, strategy and resources. A multi-year forecast then demonstrates viability. Discover how to structure the business plan for a change of status.
Common mistakes in a change of status application
Several inconsistencies seriously weaken an application. First, revenue figures sometimes appear out of nowhere. Second, essential costs go missing, such as contributions or insurance. In addition, many applicants confuse profitability with cash flow. Finally, the applicant's personal income often stays out of the calculations.
Never announce a contract that does not exist. Quotes, letters of intent or exchanges with prospects carry more weight than a promise. To review your file, see the seven mistakes that weaken a status change.
Juristelo helps you build the financial section. The tool links your assumptions to the income statement and cash flow. Still, it does not replace individual legal advice. Before filing, always compare your application with the current list from your prefecture.
