From student status to self-employment

A non-EU student wishing to carry out a self-employed activity as their main occupation in France may apply for the “entrepreneur/profession libérale” residence permit. The activity must comply with the law, be economically viable and provide sufficient means of support.

The application should be prepared before the student permit expires. Service Public states that it is filed with the competent prefecture during the two months before expiry; always check the local process.

What must the case demonstrate?

• A genuine project pursued as the main activity
• Consistency between the applicant's background and the activity
• An identifiable market and customers
• Revenue capable of covering costs and personal income
• Compliance with rules for regulated professions

Since 17 May 2026, a national evidence list applies to the prior economic viability opinion. Exact documents depend on the activity and the applicant's situation.
